Dracula Movie Posters from the 1931 Classic Universal Horror Movie Starring Bela Lugosi
Dracula Movie Posters
Released by Universal Studios in 1931, Dracula was the first in the Universal horror series. It features Bela Lugosi in the title role of Dracula and Dwight Frye as his servant Renfield. Dracula was directed by Tod Browning and was based on the 1924 stage play Dracula by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston, which in turn is loosely based on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. Enthusiastic young Hollywood producer Carl Laemmle, Jr. saw box office potential in Stoker’s gothic chiller, and he legally acquired the novel’s film rights.
Today, Dracula is widely regarded as a horror classic and Lugosi’s portrayal of count Dracula is widely regarded as the definitive Dracula. He terrified 1931 audiences with his slow, deliberate delivery of some of horror’s most classic film lines (“I bid you…welcome!” , “I never drink…wine!” , “Listen to them. Children of the night. What music they make.”). Dracula became Bela Lugosi’s signature role, his Dracula a cultural icon, and he himself a legend in the classic Universal Horror film series.
